IDEA#17 Formal Argument
 Overview Pages:65-67
"Arguing from a logical position in order to learn dates back to Protagoras in Athens over 2,000 years ago. The Formal Argument activity has students hear various views prior to coming to a judgment. This IDEA can vary from two individuals to multiple groups formally arguing about an issue. Students benefit from participation in Formal Arguments by developing critical thinking and oral communication skills (Kennedy, 2007). This activity also helps students consider various views related to course content and can be used in a variety of classroom settings. Finally, it helps teach a student that disagreement and discussion related to an issue can lead to positive outcomes.Formal Arguments require students to understand their own views as well as those of others. This activity can help challenge preconceived notions and encourage students to engage dynamically with course content. Formal Arguments also can be helpful for demonstrating comprehension and opinions related to key course concepts and ideas." — Teaching for Learning, Major CH, Harris MS, Zakrajsek T, 2016
