Brief Description
"Students are presented with a series of questions that ask them to make predictions prior to a learning activity, and then, after the learning activity, they revisit their predictions to evaluate accuracy and correct potential misconceptions."

 Purpose
"The process of the Prediction Guide helps students to activate prior knowledge as they think critically about a topic, identifying and challenging their preconceived ideas about key ideas, issues, or concepts. In addition to helping students connect new ideas and concepts to existing knowledge, this LAT has the benefit of increasing student curiosity about a topic. It also provides students with a purpose for engaging in the activity even if they are not intrinsically interested in the topic, as they will want to find out if their predictions were accurate. Finally, asking students to respond to questions prior to a content module scaffolds their learning by focusing their attention on significant concepts to come." — Learning Assessment Techniques, Barkley, EF and Major, CH, 2016
