Brief Description"Students individually write an essay question and model answer on a reading assignment, lecture, or other. Pairs exchange questions, write responses to each other’s questions, and then compare the model with their own. The students next discuss their responses and in a final step, complete a peer evaluation of each other’s performance."

Purpose"This LAT gives students practice identifying the most important feature of an assignment and formulating and answering questions about that assignment. It also gives students an opportunity to rehearse responding to essay questions, with the added advantage of having a sample response with which to compare their answer. This technique therefore can help students deepen their understanding as they write questions and then evaluate another’s response to the question they design, while practicing their own skills at responding to a peer’s question." — Learning Assessment Techniques, Barkley, EF and Major, CH, 2016.
