Brief Description
"Students select a current problem, and they research it through independent or group study. They next prepare a summary of the main issues involved and outline proposed solutions, which they then evaluate for strengths and weaknesses. In their papers, students often make a call to action."

 Purpose
"Briefing Papers allow students to explore problems that are interesting and relevant to them, rather than receiving one pre-selected by the teacher. In this technique, students tend to write for a specific audience, such as a government agency, which need information about the problem and that can potentially help to achieve resolution to it.

Since they write to a specific audience, one who holds authority to do something about the problem, the activity feels authentic. Because of this, students often are motivated to participate and learn." — Learning Assessment Techniques, Barkley, EF and Major, CH, 2016.
