Encourage discussions outside class
 Overview Pages:492-494

Strategies to encourage students to discuss ideas with lecturer outside of class:

• Be friendly, accessible and stay after class. This strategy aims to remove barriers that students may experience due to feeling intimidated by speaking to a lecturer directly and privately.

• Encourage students to visit your office once in the early term to understand your students with regard to their study choices, challenges they anticipate or already have before assignments begin. This strategy allows students to be more comfortable about seeking help from you as a lecturer.

• Use an office hour to orient students who may have missed the first class. This strategy informs students who have missed class to learn about requirements, expectations and course procedures.

• Other strategies include:
Return student work with asking them to see you during office hours,
Leave your door open during office hours,
Convert some office hours for drop-in tutorial session,
Encourage students to schedule appointments and follow up on students that may miss a scheduled appointment,
Reach out to students who have academic difficulties.
