Student respondent characteristics

This section of the report provides an overview of how accurately a sample of respondents represents an institution’s actual student population, and compares a certain sample with the total sample of students who responded nationally, and with samples of similar institutional types.

Student frequency distribution

The number and percentage of student responses to all survey items for an institution are reported, as well as the results per item.

Student means comparison

Tables comparing a certain institution’s students’ responses to the total sample are provided. The tables include means, statistical tests, and effect sizes for all survey items. This will enable institutions to identify key differences in the behaviour of their students and students at other participating institutions.

Benchmark comparisons

Results for the five benchmarks of Effective Educational Practice, namely, Active and Collaborative Learning (ACL), South African Student Effort (SASE), Academic Challenge (AC), Student-Staff Interaction (SSI), and South African Support for Learners (SASL), are provided. The results compare an institution to the rest of the CSSE 2011/12 sample. Included in the results are means, statistical tests, and effect sizes. A graphical representation of the results is given.

Benchmark items

This is a full description of each benchmark and the items included in each benchmark.
