Famed Bloemfontein-based children’s book author Jaco Jacobs will deliver the 35th DF Malherbe Memorial Lecture on 16 March 2022.

The DF Malherbe Memorial Lecture is one of the institutional lectures of the University of the Free State and is hosted by the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch, German and French.  Former speakers include Coenie de Villiers, Bettina Wyngaard, and Prof Theuns Eloff, former Vice-Chancellor of the North-West University.

Jaco Jacobs is the author of more than 170 books for children and young adults, and he has translated more than 300 titles into Afrikaans. Among his awards are the Alba Bouwer Prize, the Tienie Holloway Medal, the CP Hoogenhout Award, the Scheepers Prize for Youth Literature, and 29 ATKV Children’s Book Awards. 

In Britain, the English translations of two of his books were nominated for the prestigious Carnegie Medal, and he has been nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, the highest international accolade for children’s books. His work is currently being translated into Italian, Dutch, and Portuguese, and two of his books have been adapted into feature films.
