Four University of the Free State (UFS) Library and Information Services (LIS) staff members were recognised as outstanding professionals for their exceptional contributions to the library sector at the 2024 Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) Annual Awards.

The four were celebrated for their leadership, innovation and mentorship, underscoring the essential role that librarians play in shaping knowledge access and fostering inclusivity.

The awards ceremony, which took place during the LIASA Conference from 1 to 4 October 2024 at Durban’s International Convention Centre, also saw UFS staff presenting six insightful research papers, further elevating the university’s profile.

Xolelwa Xorile, Senior Assistant Officer: Library Circulation in the LIS Department, was named the Emerging Librarian of the Year for her dynamic and forward-thinking approach to the evolving role of libraries in the digital age.

Xorile said: “As an emerging librarian, receiving this recognition is both humbling and motivating. It affirms the passion and dedication I have put into my work, and it’s an honour to be acknowledged by the professional body in our profession. This award not only reflects my personal growth but also serves as a reminder of the potential and impact librarians can have in advancing access to information. I am very happy to have received this award and equally excited to continue contributing to the field.”

Xorile’s dedication to creating inclusive spaces and ensuring equitable access to information has marked her as a rising leader in the profession.

In a category that highlights the growing importance of research support, Research Librarian Hesma van Tonder became the inaugural recipient of the 2024 Research Librarian of the Year award. “As a research librarian, I see myself as instrumental in assisting the UFS in becoming one of the best research-led universities in South Africa, the continent and globally,” said van Tonder.

Nambitha Manqola, Assistant Director for Digital Scholarly Communication, received an Appreciation Award for Pre-Emerging Librarian 2022-2024. She also received the Emerging Librarian of the Year award in 2022.

The UFS Vision 130 emphasises a commitment to research excellence and community engagement, and libraries play a pivotal role in supporting this vision by providing access to essential resources and fostering an environment conducive to learning and innovation.

Tebogo Makhurupetsi, an Officer in the LIS Department and a finalist for Librarian of the Year 2024, was recognised for her excellence in library operations and her involvement in educational programmes that empower teachers in school librarianship.

"Being a finalist for the Librarian of the Year Award was an honour and a reminder of the impact we have in shaping our communities and academic spaces. The conference inspired me with new ideas on the evolving role of libraries, and I’m eager to launch collaborative projects that strengthen ties with the community. This experience has renewed my commitment to advocating for libraries as catalysts for education and growth," added Makhurupetsi.

As libraries evolve in the digital era, these UFS award recipients are leading the charge to ensure that information remains accessible, equitable, and impactful for all.
