Qwaqwa Campus Pioneers International Collaboration

In a groundbreaking move, the University of the Free State (UFS) Qwaqwa Campus has solidified its commitment to internationalisation through a successful exchange programme with the Freiburg University of Education in Germany. This partnership, formalised by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), has opened doors for students, staff, and faculty members to engage in enriching academic and cultural exchanges.

One of the early beneficiaries of this collaboration is Sanelisiwe Khumalo, a master's student from the Department of Sociology in the Faculty of The Humanities. For four months, Khumalo embarked on a life-changing journey to Freiburg, Germany, where she immersed herself in the vibrant academic and cultural landscape.

Reflecting on the experience, Khumalo shared her enthusiasm, "The opportunity to study at the Freiburg University of Education was a dream come true. The university's reputation for innovative teaching methods and its commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment were incredibly appealing."

A World of Opportunities

During her time in Germany, Khumalo not only excelled academically, but also embraced the opportunity to explore the country's rich cultural heritage. She participated in various activities, including hiking in the Black Forest, visiting historical cities such as Frankfurt and Stuttgart, and attending cultural events.

One particularly memorable experience was her encounter with other Africans during an artistic intervention by Thabo Thindi. This event provided a powerful platform for reflection and cultural exchange, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.

Academic Growth and Personal Development

The exchange programme also had a profound impact on Khumalo's academic development. She appreciated the collaborative and independent learning environment at Freiburg University of Education, where critical thinking, groupwork, and practical application were emphasised.

"The teaching methods were engaging and relevant," Khumalo explained. "The professors encouraged us to participate in discussions and the coursework was often focused on real-world challenges."

While the experience was not without its challenges – such as the language barrier and adjusting to a new culture – she overcame these obstacles through perseverance and a willingness to learn.

A Global Perspective

The exchange programme has equipped Khumalo with valuable skills and knowledge that will undoubtedly benefit her future academic pursuits and career goals. She gained practical problem-solving skills, improved her communication abilities, and developed a more global perspective.

Moreover, the experience had a significant impact on her personal growth. Khumalo has become more independent, confident, and open to different perspectives.

She wholeheartedly recommends the exchange programme to other UFS Qwaqwa students. She emphasised the importance of stepping out of one's comfort zone, embracing new experiences, and immersing oneself in the local culture.

"The exchange programme is not just about academics; it's about personal growth and development," Khumalo said. "It's an opportunity to broaden your horizons and gain a unique perspective on the world."

A Testament to International Collaboration

Khumalo acknowledges that the success of her exchange programme is a testament to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders. The University of the Free State Office for International Affairs, particularly Kekeletso Makau, Kagiso Ngake, and Bongani Vilakazi, played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth and successful experience. Their dedication and support were invaluable.

Furthermore, the Department of Sociology, led by Dr Divane Nzima, Dr Khangelani Moyo, and Prof Sethulego Matebesi, deserve special recognition for introducing Khumalo to this life-changing opportunity. Their guidance and encouragement were instrumental in her academic and personal growth.
