Gabriella Marais, student-athlete from the University of the Free State (UFS), proudly represented South Africa at the 2025 FISU World University Games.

From 16 to 27 July 2025, the vibrant German cities of Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim, Hagen, and Berlin played host to the FISU World University Games. This prestigious global sporting event brought together around 8,500 student-athletes and officials from more than 150 countries, competing across 18 different sporting codes.

South Africa made a powerful impression on the international stage, finishing seventh overall in the medal standings. The national team’s exceptional performance earned them 19 medals in total - six gold, five silver, and eight bronze - with University of the Free State (UFS) athletes proudly contributing to this achievement.

Kovsies on the podium

The UFS was proudly represented by five student-athletes and one team administrator, three of whom returned as medallists for South Africa.

  • Gabriella Marais claimed a bronze medal in the women’s 100m, impressing with her speed and competitive spirit.
  • Wernich van Rensburg brought home a silver medal in the Mixed 4x400m Relay,
  • Mthi Mthimkulu earned two silver medals, one in the Mixed 4x400m Relay and another in the Men’s 4x100m Relay.

Reflecting on his experience, Mthimkhulu shared, “The atmosphere was electric, and to stand on the podium alongside my teammates was an unforgettable moment. It was a great event to attend as it boosted my athlete profile. I also believe our managers made it easy for us to compete, and they were always available when we needed help. But I really appreciate the opportunity I got to represent not just the country, but the University of the Free State as well.”

Rising star in the field

First-year UFS student Tyla Wasmüth made her debut on the global athletics stage, qualifying for the final round of the women’s Discus Throw. She finished 11th in the world with a throw of 46.84m – an exceptional achievement early in her university career.

Tyla is coached by African record-holder Elizna Pretorius (née Naudé), and her performance reflects both her natural talent and the world-class guidance she receives.

Leadership behind the scenes

Also representing the UFS was Kesa Molotsane, who served as team manager for the South African athletics delegation. In addition to playing a vital logistical and motivational role, Kesa made a significant contribution by launching a major technical appeal during the Games - a bold, career-defining move that showcased her leadership and dedication. She was also one of the youngest team managers present at the event.

Proudly Kovsies

South Africa's performance at the 2025 FISU World University Games stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to developing young athletic talent. The success of the UFS athletes highlights not only their dedication and hard work, but also the vital support of coaches, families, and university sport programmes.

The University of the Free State continues to prove itself as a proud home of champions – nurturing excellence both on and off the field.
