LisPod Studio transforms UFS Library into a cutting-edge digital hub for podcasting and multimedia innovation.

The University of the Free State (UFS) Library and Information Services (LIS/ UFS Library) is embracing digital transformation through LisPod Studio, a cutting-edge podcasting initiative aimed at enhancing knowledge sharing and engagement within the university community.

As podcasting continues to grow as a major communication tool, the UFS Library has increasingly incorporated this medium into its offering and strategies in order to stay ahead in digital information dissemination. The LisPod initiative repurposes library spaces, offering students, faculty, and researchers an innovative platform to develop skills in podcast creation, video production, and audio editing, exchange ideas, and broaden access to knowledge.

Launched in 2023 inside the UFS Sasol Library on the Bloemfontein Campus, LisPod Studio was developed in response to the success of researcher profiling projects, book review sessions, and multimedia initiatives within the UFS Library.

The studio is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including industry-standard tools such as the Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro, Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, a 55-inch monitor, professional acoustic panels, and advanced software like Camtasia and Adobe Audition. It is housed under the Digital Services Division led by Charlie Molepo and serves as a dynamic space for high-quality content production as well as insightful discussions on research, library campaigns, current affairs, information literacy, and book recommendations.

“LisPod Studio has revolutionised how the UFS Library engages with students, faculty, and researchers,” says Tsholofelo Maleho, Assistant Director of Digital Library Services. “It bridges the gap between research and public engagement by transforming complex academic discussions into accessible content. This positions the Library as a hub for digital scholarship and knowledge dissemination.”

Beyond academic engagement, LisPod ensures continuous access to information, overcoming time and location constraints. This fosters knowledge sharing beyond traditional settings and reinforces the UFS Library’s commitment to innovation in digital engagement. The initiative also enhances the visibility of UFS research, ensuring that academic discussions reach students, faculty, external stakeholders, and global audiences.

“Through LisPod, students develop essential skills in podcasting, video production, and multimedia editing, all aligned with UFS branding,” Maleho explains. “They enhance their digital literacy, media proficiency, and storytelling skills, preparing for careers in media, content creation, and beyond.”

LisPod Studio reflects the UFS Library’s commitment to academic excellence, digital literacy, and professional development. By creating a space for students to hone their technical skills and engage in meaningful discourse, the Library continues to redefine its role in the digital age, positioning itself as a leader in information services and digital innovation.
