The University of the Free State (UFS) Kovsie Football Club secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Central University of Technology (CUT) in an electrifying away ABC Motsepe League derby at CUT Stadium on Saturday, capitalising on key moments to claim all three points.

In a tightly contested encounter brimming with intensity and drama, Kovsie FC proved more clinical in front of goal, making their chances count despite a strong and energetic start from the hosts.

CUT dominate early, but fail to convert

CUT came out firing, earning the first corner of the match as early as the third minute, signalling their intent to dominate on home soil. Their attacking pressure continued through well-delivered set pieces and dynamic wing play.

Kovsie FC, however, responded with composure, earning corners of their own in the sixth minute and later stages, showing they were equally threatening.

The visitors thought they had taken the lead in the 11th minute following a well-worked attacking move, but the goal was ruled out for offside - an early warning sign for the CUT defence.

Despite continued pressure and further corners in the 13th and 18th minutes, CUT were unable to find the breakthrough. A dangerous set piece in the 23rd minute also went begging, highlighting a recurring theme that would ultimately cost the home side.

Kovsie strike decisively to take control

After weathering the early storm, Kovsie FC found their rhythm and struck with precision, punishing defensive lapses to net twice and take control of the match. CUT responded with determination, pulling a goal back to keep the contest alive, but struggled to match Kovsie’s efficiency in front of goal.

A promising attacking move in the 26th minute underlined CUT’s intent, yet their inability to convert chances proved decisive in the outcome.

Coaches reflect on missed chances and resilience

Speaking after the match, CUT head coach Patric Malokase, expressed disappointment, pointing to missed opportunities as the turning point. “We created enough chances, especially in the first half, but we did not take them. In a Motsepe League match, that will always cost you,” he said.

Malokase emphasised the need for improvement going forward: “We showed character to come back, but we need to be more clinical and avoid mistakes at the back.”

Kovsie head coach, Mokete Tsotetsi, praised his side’s resilience and composure under pressure. “It was a tough game, especially away from home, but the players showed great determination. We stayed focused after the early pressure and took our chances well,” he said.

League standings and what lies ahead

The result strengthens Kovsies FC’s position in the ABC Motsepe League standings, with the team currently sitting in fifth  place on 49 points. CUT, meanwhile, remain in 14th position with 31points.

As the season progresses, both teams will look to build on this encounter - Kovsie drawing confidence from a valuable away win, and CUT seeking to sharpen their finishing in high-stakes matches.

Kovsie FC’s next fixture is a home clash against Bloemfontein Young Tigers on Saturday, 25 April at 15:00 on the Bloemfontein Campus.
