Mock Interview Day
Mock Interview Day 2026 at the Callie Human Centre saw UFS students engage with industry professionals, gaining practical interview experience, personalised feedback, and confidence for future employment opportunities.

On 24 and 25 February 2026, the Callie Human Centre on the University of the Free State (UFS) Bloemfontein Campus was transformed into a professional space where students participated in this year’s Mock Interview Day presented by UFS Career Services. Designed to simulate real-world interview scenarios in a safe and supportive environment, the event once again proved to be a powerful confidence-building experience for aspiring graduates.

Over the course of two days, 112 students tested their interview readiness, refined their responses, and received valuable guidance from five industry professionals (PwC, Sage, Central Media Group, the South African Institute of Professional Accountants, and UFS staff volunteers) who generously shared expertise by interviewing students. For many participants, this was their first formal interview experience – and an opportunity to confront interview anxiety before facing potential employers.

The structured process guided students from check-in to interview, debrief, evaluation, and even the option of having a professional photo taken. Throughout the interviews, students tackled common and advanced questions such as ‘Tell me about yourself’, ‘Describe your strengths and weaknesses’, and behavioural and applied questions. Practising structured answers helps students to think more clearly under pressure and communicate with greater impact.

Body language, professional etiquette, and follow-up practices were also emphasised, including the importance of eye contact, preparation, professional dress, and sending a thank-you email after the interview. Participants particularly valued the constructive, personalised feedback they received immediately after their sessions, describing it as honest, encouraging, and actionable.

The feedback from students speaks volumes:

"What I found most valuable today was the feedback I got from the interviewer; she helped me see the parts where I did well and some where there are improvements to be made. After this mock interview, I now know how to approach interview questions and how to structure them (STAR method)."

"I came here not knowing what to expect and I felt really nervous, but I got a good understanding of how interviews go and that I should just be myself. I had a few doubts of myself prior to coming here and just attending really helped me with those doubts. I feel so much better about myself because I really thought I would be bad at interviews but turns out I wasn't."

“Mock Interview Day is more than just an event,” explains Belinda Janeke, Head of Career Services. “It is a stepping stone towards employability. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, the initiative equips students with the confidence, clarity, and professional presence needed to compete in today’s job market. We also look forward to hosting this again in the second semester on both the Qwaqwa and Bloemfontein Campuses.”

With strong participation, dedicated volunteers, and overwhelmingly positive responses, this year’s event once again demonstrated that preparation truly empowers performance.
