Jessica Dlamini – Women Commissioner representative.

Jessica Dlamini, a Master of Social Sciences (Sociology) student on the University of the Free State (UFS) Qwaqwa Campus, is making significant strides on the African continent. As the first South African Women’s Commissioner representative for the African Union Student Platform (AUSP), she is championing gender equality, women’s empowerment, and social justice.

A voice for the voiceless

In her role as Women’s Commissioner representative, Jessica advocates for increased women’s participation in decision-making processes, addresses gender-based violence and inequality, and fosters dialogue and collaboration among student leaders. Her passion for social justice is evident in her research, which focuses on the intersection of water, electricity, and quality health-care access in Qwaqwa. By investigating the social and structural determinants of health inequality, she seeks to shed light on the challenges faced by marginalised communities.

Empowering rural girls

Dlamini’s commitment to empowering young women extends beyond her academic pursuits and leadership roles. In 2025, she will spearhead the ‘Take a Girl Child to Varsity’ project, aiming to mentor and inspire rural girls to pursue higher education. This initiative will provide access to educational resources and opportunities, empowering young women to become change makers in their communities.

With her impressive academic achievements, strong leadership skills, and unwavering dedication to social justice, Dlamini is poised to make a significant impact on the African continent. Her journey as an AUSP leader is just the beginning of her remarkable career.

A rising star advocating for African women

Recently, Dlamini took the stage at the AUSP Women's Forum Dialogue to address the pressing issue of inclusivity for women living with disabilities. She highlighted the need to bridge legislative, service-delivery, infrastructure, attitudinal, and capability-building gaps to create a more equitable environment for all.

Beyond her role at AUSP, Dlamini actively contributes to various organisations, including Anchored Organisation and Team Lee SA. These experiences honed her leadership skills, communication abilities, and commitment to community engagement.

Dr Khangela Moyo, Senior Lecturer and Postgraduate Coordinator in the Department of Sociology within the Faculty of The Humanities, said in his congratulatory remarks: “I would like to congratulate Jessica Dlamini on this momentous achievement, which is testament to her hard work, intelligence, and dedication. She is a shining example for all students on the Qwaqwa Campus and the broader UFS community. Her achievement demonstrates that there are no limits to international engagement and broadening one's horizons, and the UFS makes it all possible.”
