Prof Pierre Venter
Prof Pierre Venter, an alumnus of the University of the Free State, has been appointed as the next Vice-Chancellor of Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University in New Zealand.

The University of the Free State (UFS) is proud to celebrate one of its own, Prof Pierre Venter, who has been appointed as the next Vice-Chancellor of Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University in New Zealand, effective 2 February 2026.

A UFS graduate through and through, Prof Venter holds a BSc in Biology, a BSc(Hons) in Microbiology, and a PhD in Microbiology from the UFS. These qualifications have laid the foundation for a remarkable career spanning academia, industry, and global leadership. His appointment at one of New Zealand’s leading universities is a reflection of the world-class education and research excellence cultivated at the UFS.

In a congratulatory message to Prof Venter, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of the Free State, Prof Hester C. Klopper, says, “The UFS has contributed to the foundations of your scholarly excellence and your subsequent roles, and we are immensely proud to say that one of our alumni has ascended to a pivotal role in New Zealand’s higher education sector. Please know that you carry with you the unwavering support and best wishes of the Kovsie community.”

Prof Venter currently serves as Director of Research and Development at Fonterra, where he leads major research initiatives and partnerships across the dairy and food science sectors. Under his leadership, his team has received multiple global product innovation awards, and in 2024 he was honoured with the Significant Contribution to Food Safety Award from the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology.

But his roots run deep in the Free State. Before emigrating to New Zealand in 2011, Prof Venter was a professor, researcher, and doctoral supervisor at the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein, where his passion for mentorship and applied science flourished.

At Massey, he will bring his experience in both academia and industry to lead a university known for its innovation and impact in agriculture, sustainability, and technology. In a statement by Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University, he said, “Universities shape the people and ideas that solve real-world problems, and they generate the science, technology and insights that strengthen our communities and economies” – a philosophy he clearly embodies.

For the UFS, this moment is a reminder of the reach and influence of its alumni network. Prof Venter’s story showcases the university’s continued contribution to global knowledge, innovation, and leadership; a testament to what begins on the university’s Bloemfontein Campus and echoes around the world.
