The University of the Free State (UFS) confirms that it appeared before the Free State Division of the High Court of South Africa in Bloemfontein this morning to oppose an urgent application brought by five students seeking, inter alia, an order halting the current 2026 Student Governance Elections.

The court struck the application from the roll, finding, among other grounds, that it lacked urgency and was not properly constituted. No order was made as to costs. Following the outcome, the University reaffirms its confidence in the governance, administrative, and electoral processes established for the 2026 elections to the Institutional Student Representative Council (ISRC), Campus Student Representative Councils (CSRC), and Faculty Student Structures (FSC).

These elections are being conducted within a well-established framework, underpinned by the University's governance instruments, its electoral structures, and clearly defined mechanisms for raising and resolving electoral concerns and disputes.

The University respects students' right to raise concerns and pursue recourse through appropriate institutional and legal channels. At the same time, it bears a corresponding responsibility to safeguard the integrity of its student governance processes, and to ensure that elections are conducted fairly, transparently, and with the orderliness and credibility expected by its community.

Therefore, the 2026 student governance elections will proceed in accordance with the approved electoral timetable and applicable electoral rules. The University encourages all eligible students to participate actively in the electoral process in alignment with the University values.
