The University of the Free State (UFS) continues to advance its Africa-focused internationalisation agenda through strengthened engagement with the Kenyan High Commission. A recent courtesy visit to the Bloemfontein Campus underscored the institution’s commitment to fostering meaningful partnerships that support higher education, research, and student mobility across the continent.

Deepening continental collaboration

The delegation, led by Education Attaché Lucy Musau and her assistant, Ditlalane Esther Mapadimeng, engaged with the UFS leadership, including Dr Molapo Qhobela and Dr Temba Hlasho, alongside academic and professional staff.

Discussions centred on expanding collaboration between the UFS and Kenyan institutions, with a focus on joint research initiatives, postgraduate supervision, and academic mobility.

This engagement forms part of broader efforts by the Kenyan High Commission to strengthen ties with South African universities and to promote knowledge exchange and capacity development across Africa. As a key regional hub for higher education and research, Kenya presents significant opportunities for impactful and structured collaboration.

Advancing the UFS internationalisation agenda

The visit aligns with the UFS’ strategic priority to deepen partnerships across the African continent, with East Africa identified as a region of growing importance. By strengthening institutional relationships, the university aims to contribute to knowledge production while also fostering the development of future scholars equipped to address continental challenges.

Dr Molapo Qhobela, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Strategic Initiatives, International and Institutional Affairs, emphasised the value of such partnerships. “Partnerships such as these enable us to build meaningful academic relationships across the continent,” he said. “They create opportunities for collaboration that support both knowledge production and the development of the next generation of scholars.”

Enhancing the student experience

A dedicated session with Kenyan students currently enrolled at the UFS provided valuable insights into their academic journeys and overall experiences. The discussion highlighted the importance of institutional support and international partnerships in enabling student success, while also reinforcing the role of student mobility in enriching the university community.

Building sustainable partnerships

Hosting the delegation reflects the important role universities play in connecting institutions and advancing shared priorities. As the relationship between the UFS and Kenyan partners continues to develop, the focus will be on translating engagement into sustained collaboration that enhances research, academic exchange, and institutional growth.

Through initiatives such as this, the UFS reaffirms its commitment to strengthening partnerships that not only benefit the institution but also contribute to the broader advancement of higher education across Africa.
