Graduates encouraged to work hard and play hard

Written by Valentino Ndaba l 9 December 2022
“Even though the road ahead may be difficult at times, work hard and play hard, while also being mindful that the world is in constant change, and abundant with new opportunities. Remain open to new possibilities and embrace change,” Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Francis Petersen, said to graduands as they eagerly waited to receive qualifications from the faculties of Education, Economic and Management Sciences, and Law.

By virtue of the power vested in him as Acting Chancellor, Prof Petersen officially constituted the December graduation ceremonies on the morning of 9 December 2022 in the Callie Human Centre on the Bloemfontein Campus.

Envisioning the future

Prof Petersen emphasised the significance of graduates having an impact in their communities as he wished them success in all their endeavours. “It is up to you to align yourself with those who have a common cause, heal the divisions that keep us separated, and carry along those who have been left out and are struggling.”

He then shared the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Vision 130, which highlights the impact the university aims to make by 2034 when it will commemorate 130 years in existence.

Being purpose-driven

As guest speaker of the day, Mr Temba Hlasho, Executive Director: Student Affairs, also reiterated the significance of paying it forward. “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world. It is for this purpose that you should go out there and change the world. The time has now come for many of you to start giving back to the world.”

All the ceremonies will be broadcast on the official UFS YouTube channel. Join the ultimate launch of the festive season as we celebrate the graduates on:
