This symposium is hosted in collaboration with the QwaQwa campus in the rural Eastern Free State. This campus is next to the town of Phuthaditjhaba. It is situated close to the recently renovated Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the awe-inspiring Maluti mountain range and the picturesque town of Clarens. In addition to the breathtaking surrounding natural beauty, the campus played an important historical role in the area. It was established in 1980 under auspices of the University of the North as one of a few black universities and incorporated with the University of the Free State as satellite campus in 2003.

Given its location, it plays an important role in providing higher education in the Eastern Free State and 4 260 students are currently enrolled there. An additional aim of this colloquium is to contribute to the development of a high quality academic environment in QwaQwa.
