Students who meet with an academic adviser have a higher probability of passing more than 70% of their modules (UFS, CTL 2018). Academic advising is therefore at the core of being a successful student at the UFS.

What can you expect from academic advising?
The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), in collaboration with the faculties, is a great place to start if you have any questions related to your academic and career pathway. Your advising experience will evolve as you advance on your journey at the UFS.

What is academic advising?
Academic advising at the University of the Free State focuses on student learning, educational experiences, and seeks to connect students’ academic interests and skills with their personal and career ambitions. Advisers teach you to plan and manage your educational journey and guide you through decision-making processes related to your educational journey.

Advising throughout your academic career
Advising at the UFS may take many forms, depending on your access, progression, and success throughout your student journey as depicted in Figure 1.

The ultimate goal of academic advising is to instil academic behaviours that will promote access with success. You are welcome (and encouraged) throughout your time at the UFS to access advising services.

Academic advisers can assist with:

  • Academic and career pathway planning (i.e. module codes, majors, minors etc.)
  • Learning/Study strategies
  • Time management
  • Revision planning
  • Exam preparation
  • University transition
  • Goal setting
