Explore CTL

The Student Learning and Success (SLS) focus area leads and coordinates tutorials and senior student success initiatives as High Impact Practices (HIPs) that advance student learning and employability.

SLS started with one flagship tutoring programme that was established in 2007 with 55 tutors. In 2015 the tutorial programme was renamed The Academic Student Tutorial and Excellence Programme (A_STEP). Since 2015, SLS, through the A_STEP programme, has offered both tutorial support to students and contributed to talent development within CTL and the broader university (through its internship programme and the Teaching and Learning Coordinators (TLC) development pathway).

In 2020/21 the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) structurally reorganised in response to the UFS’s strategic objectives as outlined in the UFS Strategic Plan, the Learning and Teaching Strategy, the Digitisation Strategy, and the recent Vision130 goals. SLS expanded its mandate to include the new Senior Student Success Programme to its flagship programme, A_STEP. The Senior Student Success Programme consists of the Senior Students Orientation, officially launched in February 2021, and the Senior Student Experience, consisting of bespoke career development and employability initiatives such as the Diamond League, LinkedIn Learning and #SecureTheGrad.
