“In changing societies such as South Africa, policies are continually being revised and replaced.…
Good-quality research is essential to guide policy-making”
(Pillay, 2006:453).

Welcome to the webpage of the Philosophy and Education Policy Studies discipline. The discipline is currently the academic home of three academic fields, namely Philosophy of Education, Policy Studies in Education and Social Justice in Education.

At undergraduate level, we are responsible for a number of modules in the B Ed and PGCE programmes that inter alia address issues of democracy, transformation, diversity and social justice in education. We also explore the paradigms that underpin education curricula. We aim to promote authentic learning, critical thinking and self-reflection in prospective educators.

At postgraduate level, we currently offer a number of programmes in Policy Studies in Education, as well as in Philosophy of Education. We aim to capacitate students with deep knowledge, critical thinking skills and focused research proficiencies in these courses. We strictly limit our intake in these programmes to assure that we can deliver quality programmes. We have certain procedures that students must follow towards application and selection.

In our discipline, we strive towards innovative and fresh research. Specific areas of interest by members in our discipline are democracy in education, transformation in education, school violence and discipline as well as teaching for diversity and social justice. A list of recent publications (pdf) by members in our discipline, conference papers delivered (pdf), as well as the titles of recent PhD and M Ed graduates (pdf) are attached.

The information that we provide above is limited. Please feel free to contact me via e-mail or telephonically if you require any more information.
