Course Overview For African Languages

SESOTHO modules are offered in various undergraduate qualifications of Bachelor of Arts (Extended and Mainstream) at Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa campus. ISIZULU modules are also offered in various undergraduate qualifications of the Bachelor of Arts (Extended and Mainstream) at Qwaqwa campus only, except professional modules which are also offered at Bloemfontein.

The following African languages modules (Sesotho and isiZulu) are offered by the Department:

SSML 1514: Sesotho Language structure and usage
First Semester (NQF Level 5) – 16 Credits

Knowledge of the sound system and the word structure as essential components of meaningful language study within Sesotho cultural contexts. The advanced understanding of different types and functions of syntactical constructions.


SSMT 1524: Sesotho Oral Literature
First Semester (NQF Level 5) – 16 Credits

Gives an understanding of Sesotho oral tradition as an art form informing modern Sesotho literature and as an expression of the African worldview, values and ideology of its producers.


SSML 2614: Sociolinguistics in Sesotho
First Semester (NQF Level 6) - 16

The study of the inter-relationship between the Sesotho language and society, where the understanding non-linguistic factors such as the social nature of the Sesotho language impact on interpersonal and societal communication.


SSMT 2624: Sesotho Poetry and Drama
First Semester (NQF Level 6) – 16 Credits

Study of the emergence, development, artistic features and literary theoretical approaches of poetry and drama in Sesotho.


SSML 3718: Historical Development of Sesotho Linguistics
First Semester (NQF Level 7) - 32 Credits

Knowledge of the development of Sesotho as a written language from the first orthographic representation in 1837, based on theories, principles and practices which critically analyse linguistic trends and historical periods of Sesotho Language, and the impact of language policies or the absence thereof.


SSMT 3728: Historical Development of Sesotho Literature
Second Semester (NQF Level 7) - 32 Credits

Gives an understanding and critical analysis of the historical development of Sesotho literature, from oral stage, through the missionary period until the present stage, providing the students with the ability to categorize Sesotho literature in terms of literary trends as well as historical periods.

ZULL 1514: IsiZulu Language structure and usage
First Semester (NQF Level 5) – 16 Credits

Advanced communication skills for construction of meaningful Sesotho sentences and introduction to reading and writing skills.


SSOL 2624 Creative and Transactional writing in Sesotho
Second Semester (NQF Level 6) - 16 credits

Skills for writing creative and transactional texts in Sesotho.


SSOL 3714 Complex Communication in Sesotho
First Semester (NQF Level 7) - 16 credits

Complex Communication skills in the multicultural linguistic landscapes where Sesotho features prominently.

Introduction to the basic concepts and context of oral literature as well as modern prose fiction.

BSCC1522S: Basic Sesotho Communication Course

This short learning programme is intended to equip the non-Sesotho speaker with basic communication skills in Sesotho. These skills will enable the learner to acquire the communication skills to speak to a Sesotho speaker on an elementary level.


ISCC1522S: Intermediate Sesotho Communication Course

This course is intended to equip the non-Sesotho speaker with intermediate communication skills in Sesotho. These skills will enable the learner to acquire the communication skills to speak to a Sesotho speaker on an elementary level.
