Short CV

I am a senior lecturer at the University of the Free State. I have held an academic position at the University since 1981 when I started my professional career.

I have completed my under and postgraduate studies at the University of the Free State. My masters dissertation was a theoretical discussion on the understanding of non-western art from an anthropological point of view, while my doctoral thesis was an empirical study on culture acquisition in South Sotho families in an urban context.

Although my teaching of anthropology requires a broad knowledge of subjects that vary from research methodology, theoretical schools of thought, urbanisation, culture theory, and cultural practices in the fields of ecological and industrial anthropology, my research and publications have focused mostly on crafts and material culture, art, multiculturality, identity, children and lately also leisure. I have taught various courses in anthropology for learners specialising in other disciplines, for example nursing, general medical science, economic management, and leisure science. Through this experience as well as through my involvement in both basic and applied research projects, I have experienced the need for basic cultural knowledge to be the most important denominator. Thus, I see myself as a cultural specialist with the aim to find some understanding of human life in all its variety.
