Master of Arts with specialisation in Hebrew
The MA Hebrew is a research qualification consisting of writing a master’s dissertation on original research. The topic of the dissertation is chosen in consultation with the supervisor(s).
PhD with specialisation in Hebrew
The PhD Hebrew is a research qualification consisting of writing a doctoral thesis on original research. The topic of the thesis is chosen in consultation with the supervisor(s).
Postgraduate Qualifications in Bible Translation
The following qualifications are offered: MA Bible Translation, MA Bible Translation Management, and PhD Bible Translation. These qualifications are coordinated by the Hebrew Department, but reside in the Faculty of Theology. The coordinator of the qualifications is Prof Cynthia Miller-Naudé.
MA Bible Translation
The MA Bible Translation is intended for individuals who are or will be engaged in Bible translation as translators, exegetical advisers or consultants. Distinctives of the UFS programme are: (1) setting Bible translation within the broader context of translation studies; (2) emphasis on translation from the biblical source texts; (3) seeing Bible translators as agents of change and Bible translation as part of Scripture engagement and language development.
- 1 year full time / 2 years part-time (does not require residence in South Africa)
- Three modules (classes): “Theory and Practice of Bible Translation,” “Linguistics for Bible Translators” (or “Advanced Topics in Linguistics for Bible Translators”), “Bible Hermeneutics, Exegesis and Theology” (or “Advanced Topics in Biblical Languages for Bible Translators”)
- Mini-dissertation on a topic relevant to the student
- Prerequisites for admission: (1) four year bachelor’s degree OR three year bachelor’s degree plus one year BA Honours degree; (2) equivalent of two years of biblical Hebrew or Greek
MA Bible Translation Management
The MA Bible Translation Management programme combines training in management and leadership with instruction in Bible translation.
- One year full-time / two years part-time
- Does not require residence in South Africa
- Three modules (classes): “Management and Leadership for Bible Translators,” “Theology, Religion Studies and Culture” (or “Advanced Topics in Theology, Religion Studies and Culture”), and “Bible Translation and Linguistics” (or “Advanced Topics in Bible Translation and Linguistics”)
- Mini-dissertation on a topic relevant to the student
- Prerequisite for admission: four-year bachelor’s degree OR three-year bachelor’s degree plus one-year BA Honours degree
PhD Bible Translation
The PhD Bible Translation is a research degree which consists solely in the writing of a doctoral thesis. Prospective students should contact the Coordinator of Bible Translation Programmes to discuss potential topics for research.
- Does not require residence in South Africa; requires access to a library for research.
- Prerequisites for admission: master’s degree in relevant field, including the writing of a master’s dissertation
