BACHELOR OF ARTS HONOURS WITH SPECIALISATION IN LANGUAGE PRACTICE

The BAHons in Language Practice is a postgraduate specialisation qualification that prepares students for research-based postgraduate studies in Language Practice. It serves to consolidate and enhance the student’s expertise in language practice, as well as to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of this discipline. The qualification requires a high level of theoretical involvement and intellectual independence.

Admission requirements:
Achieve a minimum average of 65% in an applicable undergraduate qualification (exit level 7).

Modules:
Compulsory modules:

  • A module in the field of linguistics as specified by the Department
  • LAPR6800 Research Report: Language Practice

Specialisation modules

Candidates select two of modules below:

  • LAPT6808 Approaches to translation theory and practice (32 credits)
  • LAPI6808 Interpreting theory and practice (32 credits)
  • LAPM6808 Language Policy, Language Planning and Language Management (32 credits)
  • LAPE6808 Professional editing (32 credits)

MASTER OF ARTS WITH SPECIALISATION IN LANGUAGE PRACTICE

The MA in Language Practice serves to teach and train researchers to contribute to the development of knowledge at an advanced level, or to prepare graduated students for an advanced and specialised professional career in the language professions.

Admission requirements:
Achieve a minimum average of 65% in an applicable Honours qualification (exit level 8).

Curriculum:
Students may choose between Option 1 (dissertation) and Option 2 (structured) below:

OPTION 1:
Dissertation (Academic Plan Code: BC180039)
Students write a dissertation (LAPD8900) or two interrelated, publishable manuscripts or published articles in accredited journals (LAPA8900) about a topic selected in consultation with the supervisor and the academic head of the department.

OPTION 2:
Structured: Coursework and a mini-dissertation (Academic Plan Code: BC170039)
This programme is offered subject to sufficient enrolments.

Compulsory (first year of study):

  • An NQF Level 8 module in the field of linguistics/any other equivalent module as specified by the Department (32 credits)
  • LAPR7924 Research methodology (16 credits)

Candidates must take at least 40 credits from one of the specialisation modules below:

  • LAPT7900 Advances in translation theory and practice (40 credits)
  • LAPI7900 Advances in interpreting theory and practice (40 credits)
  • LAPM7900 Advances in language policy and planning (40 credits)

Mini-dissertation in the second year (92 credits)

A mini-dissertation (LAPD7900) of 92 credits in the chosen field of specialisation about a topic selected in consultation with the supervisor and the academic head of department.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY WITH SPECIALISATION IN LANGUAGE PRACTICE

Candidates undertake research in language practice at the most advanced academic level, which culminates in the submission, assessment and acceptance of a PhD thesis. It is expected of candidates to demonstrate an advanced level of research ability and make a meaningful and original academic contribution in the field of language practice.

Admission requirements:
Achieve a minimum average of 70% in an applicable Masters qualification (exit level 9).

Curriculum:
Students have to write a thesis (LAPT9100) or three interrelated, publishable manuscripts or published articles in accredited journal(s) (LAPA9100) about a research topic selected in consultation with the supervisor and the academic head of department.
