When an athlete wins the Spar Women’s Grand Prix 10km series in her debut season, it is hard to believe her success did not happen overnight. But for Kesa Molotsane it was a journey of seven years.

The KovsieSport Senior Sportswoman of the Year had a superb 2017. This however was the culmination of years of dedication.

On 27 September 2017 she was chosen as the top Kovsie Sportswoman. “It made me realise how important dedication is. All it required was dedication in what I have always been doing in my training and competitions,” she said.

Support from likes of mother and coaches

Molotsane said many people had contributed to her success. “My mom has played a vital role. If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t still be running. The constant support and encouragement from my sisters and friends sustained me.” She also praised her coaches who had given her a solid support structure.

Some of her accolades in 2017 include being the South African and University Sports South Africa 5000 m champion, and competing at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Kampala where she finished 36th in the world. She also won the Klein Karoo Street Mile in Oudtshoorn, the Lesotho Mile, and came second at the South African cross-country championships in Potchefstroom.

From Tapei to Johannesburg

Other highlights were taking part in the World Student Games in Tapei, where she came ninth in a personal best time of 16:01:72 in the 5 000 m, and being the overall winner of the Spar Women’s Grand Prix 10km series. She was crowned champion after finishing first in Cape Town, first in Port Elizabeth, second in Durban, third in Pretoria, first in Pietermaritzburg and second in Johannesburg.
