Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:

Make sure the door to your residence/student house/apartment is locked at all times – even when leaving the room for a few minutes

Keep the windows of your room locked when leaving the room.

Be careful with your room keys.  Do not allow it to lie around; carry it on you.

Put your laptop out of sight when you leave your room for a long time and get a locking device for your laptop.

Do not leave your stuff unattended in the library, computer lab, cafeteria, and other public places.

Ask Protection Services to accompany you when you walk at night.

Or ask a friend to walk with you at night. This applies for women and men. There is more safety in numbers.

Make sure someone knows where you are going and when you expect to return.

Save emergency numbers on your cellphone.  Even better, put those numbers on speed dial.

It is not safe to hitchhike – ride with people that you know, or make use of the campus transport.
