Bridging the gap between science and society

Addressing the challenges that threaten the livelihoods of the MAP communities.

Our vision is to address the challenges that threaten the livelihoods of the MAP communities by implementing strategies aimed at building resilience against natural and non-natural risks and vulnerabilities.

Improving the livelihood of the local communities.

Our mission is to improve the livelihood of the local communities by enhancing the sustainable use of resources for the benefit of present and future generations.

Conducting engaged research and projects with societal impact in the MAP communities.

Our mandate is to
• conduct engaged research and projects on risks faced by the MAP communities to ensure societal impact;
• address challenges, including but not limited to those arising from water, energy, and local social issues; and
• increase adaptive capacities through identification, training, and implementation of supportive and innovative interventions.

What is the UFS-CGC?

The Centre for Global Change (CGC) is a flagship initiative under the Global Change Research Plan (GCRP) established by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) through the National Research Foundation (NRF).

The CGC plays a crucial role in sustainable global change. It houses researchers across various disciplines, including natural and social scientists who conduct research and community engagement projects. This work sheds light on the unique challenges faced by the community around the University of the Free State Qwaqwa Campus. Striving to operate within a transdisciplinary research framework, the CGC aims to bridge the gap between science and society.

Working closely with the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality (MAP) communities at grassroots level, our aim is to strive for social transformation in alignment with various social development goals (SDGs) through research and projects that enhance sustainable resource utilisation and the adoption of climate-friendly adaptation strategies.
