Prof Samuel Adelabu, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Geography at the University of the Free State, spent more than a month on invitation as a scholar to the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources at the University of California, Davis (UCD) Campus.

Regarding his time at the University of California – from 4 April to 13 May 2022 – Prof Adelabu said: “This was a great opportunity to benchmark and seek collaboration for personal research and for the UFS Department of Geography with an established researcher such as Prof Yufang Jin, who is the leader of the remote sensing group at the university.”

During his visit, Prof Adelabu presented to different groups, such as the Hydrological Science Group, the Remote Sensing Group, and the faculty members of both the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources, and the Department of Plant Sciences.

He said: “My research interest relates to the application of remote sensing and GIS in determining the landscape status pre and post fire, the evaluation of fire potential index, estimating factors responsible for fire spread, such as lightning, fuel and wind drivers, among many other applications, which is closely related to what is currently being done at the University of California.”

“The visit was about career development and growth for me, as I received international exposure that will lead me to the next level of my research endeavours. This opportunity is the beginning of a collaboration between the UFS Department of Geography’s research team and the UCD for future project funding opportunities and student exchange,” said Prof Adelabu.

About hosting Prof Adelabu and his research, Prof Yufang Jin said: “There is definitely research overlap between our research teams and we should look for deeper cooperation and international exchange.”

She promised to visit the UFS soon, which will be an opportunity for her “first visit to Africa”.
