Biography of The Rt Hon the Lord Peter Hain

In his early days as an activist, Peter Hain led a campaign for a sports boycott of South Africa, which brought him into early conflict with the law. He was arrested several times and successfully defended himself against malicious conspiracy charges brought by defenders of the apartheid regime. He was also the target of a failed letter bomb, before being falsely accused of bank theft. As a UK Government Minister, he held several positions, including at the Welsh Office, the FCO, and as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, where he brokered talks between the formerly opposing parties to enable a power-sharing government to be formed in Northern Ireland. Lord Hain has used parliamentary privilege on several occasions to expose injustices and corruption, and continues to strongly advocate for accountable, democratic government in South Africa, having been an early and vocal critic of state capture. Throughout his political career, Lord Hain has been a prolific author, these days turning his hand to writing novels about corruption wrapped up with the horrors of wildlife poaching. The Rhino Conspiracy was published in September 2020, and The Elephant Conspiracy, the second book in the series, will be launched in November this year. Lord Hain has lectured on various topics for several universities, most recently on the subject of leadership. He will share his hopes that South African universities and educational institutions will be a catalyst for the evolution of political leadership in South Africa.
