Werner Stander, Choirmaster of the University of the Free State (UFS) choir and part-time lecturer at the Odeion School of Music, was a notable presence at the recent Mzanzi Conductors Convention, hosted by the Choral Celebration Network Foundation (CCNF) at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The convention took place from 8 to 10 March 2024 and served as a beacon for conductors and enthusiasts alike, who converged to share and embrace the latest trends in choral music on both national and international platforms.

Reflecting on the significance of such gatherings, Stander said, "Events like the Mzanzi Conductors Convention play a pivotal role in keeping up with the new trends in choral music, and develops existing trends by holding workshops and masterclasses for choir conductors to assist in advancing the culture of choral music in South Africa."

His contribution centred on ‘Music Learning Theories for Children’s Choirs’, a key topic in the realm of choral education. He believes in the importance of exploring innovative approaches to teaching and learning choral conducting.

The convention drew diverse groupings of attendees, representing choirs from a wide range of universities and schools. Among the institutions present were the University of Johannesburg and the University of Cape Town. Stander noted “the inclusivity of the event, [with] workshops covering classical and indigenous South African music [and] affirming a commitment to a fully balanced representation of styles”.

Looking ahead, Stander expressed optimism about the UFS choir's future endeavours. He plans to use the knowledge gained from the convention to work towards further local growth and international recognition when the choir takes part in upcoming local eisteddfods (competitive arts festivals) and online competitions.

Stander says the UFS choir stands as a beacon, not only for musical excellence but also as a proud symbol of the institution's identity. "We want to showcase the talent of Kovsies to the world," he said, envisioning the choir as a flagship representative of the University of the Free State.
