Shimlas 2025 News
The UFS Shimlas are ready to take on the 2025 Varsity Cup season with determination and pride.

The University of the Free State (UFS) rugby team, the Shimlas, held their official 2025 Varsity Cup jersey handover at Shimla Park on the Bloemfontein Campus on the evening of 13 February.

The event was made even more special by the attendance of the UFS’s newly appointed Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Hester C. Klopper. Before her appointment, Prof Klopper served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Stellenbosch University – the Shimlas’ opening opponent for this year’s Varsity Cup on Monday 17 February. Her presence added an extra layer of excitement as the Shimlas prepare to take on her former institution.

Marius van Rensburg, Chairman of the UFS Rugby Club, reflected briefly on the Shimlas’ proud history and legacy. He highlighted the jerseys displayed in the Shimla Room, including those of former Shimla and Springbok greats, Springbok Head Coach Rassie Erasmus and current prop Ox Nché. Van Rensburg said the jerseys are symbols of the team’s deep-rooted tradition and the many players who have proudly worn the blue and white.

Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of a jersey from former Springbok player and current Shimla assistant coach Tiaan Liebenberg. Although Liebenberg did not play for the Shimlas, the team made a special exception to honour his contributions as a coach. This gesture was a departure from the tradition of only displaying jerseys from former Shimla players, underscoring the close bonds within the team.

Prof Klopper set the tone for the evening with an inspiring speech, drawing an analogy between the Shimlas and a Formula One car. “You, gentlemen, are very special and custom-designed parts that have come together to make the Shimlas a formidable force to be reckoned with. Your unique attributes, passion for the game, and academic drive have brought you to this point in time where you will defend your title as Varsity Cup champions,” she said. She also reminded the team of the importance of speed, steering, balance, and teamwork – qualities she hopes they will embody throughout the season.

Quoting proud former Kovsie and Springbok Head Coach Rassie Erasmus, Prof Klopper added, “If you want to achieve something you’ve never achieved before, you have to do something you’ve never done before.” She encouraged the team to approach the season with confidence and a winning mindset.

In closing, Prof Klopper assured the Shimlas of the full support of the UFS community. “Defend your title with pride and know that you have the unwavering support of the entire university. I, and several members of the UFS executive, greatly look forward to supporting you in Stellenbosch on Monday.”

With their Vice-Chancellor set to attend their season opener, the Shimlas are ready for the season ahead, determined to defend their championship title and hopefully bring it home once again.
