Affirming its commitment to holistic well-being, sustainability, and student-centred development, the University of the Free State (UFS) has earned international acclaim by achieving Platinum Status in the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) Healthy Campus Programme. The university achieved an exceptional 95% in the latest certification cycle, placing it among the programme's highest performers globally.
This achievement positions the UFS alongside Stellenbosch University and the University of Johannesburg as one of South Africa’s leading institutions in campus health and wellness initiatives.
A milestone in building a healthier, safer, and more sustainable campus
Jerry Laka, Director of KovsieSport, Arts and Culture at the UFS, emphasised the strategic significance of the recognition.
“Achieving Platinum Status affirms that the UFS not only meets but exceeds international standards in creating a healthy, safe, and sustainable campus environment. It demonstrates the university’s commitment to supporting students in every dimension of their university journey — physically, mentally, socially, and academically.”
Launched in 2020, the FISU Healthy Campus Programme is grounded in the World Health Organisation’s definition of health as complete physical, mental, and social well-being. The programme encourages universities across the world to integrate wellness into their institutional culture, operations, and long-term strategies. It also supports alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, boosting institutional reputation and global rankings.
A comprehensive, cross-campus effort
Although the programme was housed under KovsieSport, Arts and Culture, its scope extended far beyond sport. To qualify for Platinum Status, the UFS demonstrated excellence across seven core domains: Healthy Campus Management, Physical Activity and Sport, Nutrition, Disease Prevention, Mental and Social Health, Risk Behaviour, and Environmental Sustainability.
Laka noted that the university’s success hinged on strong collaboration.
“While the programme was coordinated through our department, the Platinum result reflects the efforts of dozens of departments and divisions across the university. This speaks to the power of a transversal approach - one that breaks down silos and integrates well-being into every corner of the institution.”
He highlighted the dedication of Sport Intern Gary Dateling and the leadership of Dr Temba Hlasho, Executive Director of the Division of Student Affairs, Sports, Arts and Culture, whose support helped drive a culture of collective responsibility and innovation.
Benefits for students and staff
This international recognition brings tangible benefits to the UFS community. Students can look forward to increased access to health and wellness programmes; strengthened mental health support; greater social cohesion; and enhanced academic performance. Staff members also stand to gain from initiatives promoting improved work-life balance, reduced burnout, and a more supportive working environment.
Strengthening Vision 130 through global leadership
Laka emphasised the alignment between this achievement and the university’s strategic direction.
“The FISU Healthy Campus Programme aligns directly with UFS Vision 130 and reinforces our values of care, sustainability, social justice, and student-centredness. It confirms that UFS is not only focused on academic excellence, but also on building a healthy and thriving community.”
The university plans to maintain and further strengthen its Platinum standing by sharing best practices on the FISU global platform. This will contribute to international knowledge exchange and further elevate the UFS’s global profile.
A healthier campus, a stronger future
With this recognition, the UFS continues to position itself as a leader in promoting inclusive, empowering, and sustainable environments in higher education - demonstrating that a healthy campus is the foundation of student success and institutional excellence.
