UFS athlete Mthi Mthimkhulu proudly receives the KovsieSport Sportsman of the Year award at the 2025 Free State Sport Star Awards.

The University of the Free State (UFS) shone brightly at the 2025 Free State Sport Star Awards, hosted in partnership with Novus Media in Bloemfontein. The evening celebrated excellence, resilience, and sporting achievement, with UFS athletes once again proving their strength on both national and international stages.

The prestigious titles of Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year went to Mthi Mthimkulu and Rolene Streutker, respectively, two athletes whose dedication and success continue to raise the bar for KovsieSport.

Jerry Laka, Director of KovsieSport, said these accomplishments reflect the university’s holistic approach to excellence. “The achievements have a profound impact on the university and the community of the Free State. They showcase our commitment to both academic and sporting excellence, while promoting teamwork, leadership, and discipline among student-athletes,” he said.

Mthimkulu’s golden year on the track

On the track, Mthimkulu dazzled at the World Athletics Relays Championships in China, where he helped the Men’s and Mixed 4x400m relay teams qualify for the World Athletics Senior Championships. He also claimed a gold medal in the Men’s 4x400m relay and two silver medals at the World University Games in Germany.

His stellar season saw him named both KovsieSport Sportsman of the Year and Free State Sportsman of the Year. “It is truly exhilarating to see our athletes recognised at both provincial and national levels,” Laka said. “Their hard work and dedication unite us as a community and inspire future generations.”

Streutker’s success on the court

On the netball court, Rolene Streutker led her team to victory in the 2024 Varsity Netball tournament, where she was named Player of the Tournament. Internationally, she represented South Africa in the Fast 5 competition and in series against Jamaica and New Zealand. She also competed in the UK Netball Super League with Nottingham Forest, earning Player of the Season and Gilbert Top Scorer honours.

Her exceptional performances earned her both Free State Sportswoman of the Year and the event’s highest accolade, Free State Sport Star of the Year.

Celebrating future champions

The awards also recognised rising stars, with Erich Visser named Junior Sportsman of the Year and Bianca Lubbe honoured as Junior Sportswoman of the Year. “Emerging talent is the future of our sport,” Laka said. “It’s our responsibility to support young athletes so that they can thrive.”

As KovsieSport looks to the future, Laka said their focus remains on continued development and inclusion: “Our priority going forward is to strengthen our programmes and promote the growth of women’s sport.”
