Anthony Govender, Founder and Group CEO of ASI Financial Services, presents a cheque for R100 000 to Prof Bulelwa Nguza-Mduba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operations at the University of the Free State.
On 20 February 2026, the University of the Free State (UFS) hosted a handover ceremony in the Centenary Complex, where Anthony Govender and ASI Financial Services presented a contribution in the form of a cheque to the value of R100 000 to the university.
The donation will support the VC-ISRC Imbewu Legacy Fund (ILF) – a student-centred initiative that assists academically deserving students who face financial barriers. The fund forms part of the university’s broader commitment to expanding access, improving progression and completion rates, and ensuring that financial hardship does not prevent capable students from realising their potential.
In addressing guests, Anthony Govender, Founder and Group CEO of ASI Financial Services, reflected on the responsibility that accompanies business success and the importance of investing in education as a long-term strategy for national development. He spoke about building organisations rooted in performance, discipline, and purpose, and emphasised that opportunity must be extended to those with talent and determination.
Prof Bulelwa Nguza-Mduba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operations, accepted the donation on behalf of the university. She noted that partnerships such as this one enable the UFS to strengthen its student support systems and advance its institutional priority of inclusive excellence.
While modest in scale, the contribution carries practical impact. For students supported through the Imbewu Legacy Fund, it represents continuity in their studies, stability in uncertain circumstances, and affirmation that their education matters.
The handover reflects a shared understanding between the university and industry: sustainable development depends on investing in people. Through strategic partnerships, the UFS continues to build pathways for student success and contribute to the development of capable graduates for South Africa.
