The University of the Free State celebrates Nthabiseng and Nthabeleng Mofokeng, identical twins who both graduated cum laude with Bachelor of Science degrees in Geography in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences on the Qwaqwa Campus. The twins shared classrooms, study sessions, and countless late nights, achieving the same top average and stepping confidently into the next chapter of their academic journey.

Growing up without their father, the twins were guided by their mother, Khothatsi Mofokeng, who became both provider and anchor for the family. “I am filled with immense happiness for my children,” she said. “Raising them through difficult times while acting as both mother and father has been a challenge, but what they have achieved is truly monumental.” She added, “My children have shown me the true meaning of life. I pray for their continued success in everything they do.”

From primary school to high school, the twins consistently ranked at the top of their classes. At university, they carried the same focus into leadership and service, serving on the Faculty Student Council and as executive members of Golden Key. “These experiences shaped us, not just in skill, but also in character, teaching us to lead with humility, to serve with intention, and to remain grounded, no matter the platform,” they said. Faith has guided them through every season. “Through every season, one thing has remained constant: our faith. In moments of doubt, in seasons of pressure, and even in our victories, we have leaned on the truth that ‘we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.’ That belief has carried us when our own strength has felt insufficient. Our story is not one of perfection, but of persistence.”

Their final year mirrored their lifelong dedication. Both twins achieved the top spot in Geography, demonstrating years of shared discipline and focus. Beyond academics, they guided peers through tutoring and practical facilitation, showing commitment to helping others learn. Their efforts culminated in graduating with Bachelor of Science degrees in Geography, both cum laude, and they are now pursuing honours in Geography and Geoinformatics.

Nthabiseng and Nthabeleng have proven that where you start does not determine where you finish. “There were moments when things were not easy, when our mother stretched what little we had to make sure we never went without. And even in those moments, she gave us something greater than comfort – she gave us vision.” They added, “Watching her became our first lesson in perseverance. We learned early on that nothing meaningful comes without effort, and that where you start does not determine where you finish. So, we chose to work consistently, quietly, and with intention.”
