Gadija Brown, UFS Business School alumna and Special Economic Adviser to the Deputy President of South Africa, continues to make a meaningful impact through leadership, policy, and economic transformation.

At the heart of every great institution are the success stories of its alumni leaders who carry forward its values and make meaningful contributions to society. One such story is that of Gadija Brown, a distinguished financial and economic professional with 27 years of experience across both the public and private sectors.

Today, serving as the Special Economic Adviser to the Deputy President of South Africa, Brown’s journey is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of education, leadership, and purpose.

A foundation built on excellence

Gadija Brown completed her Bachelor of Management and Leadership, majoring in Economics and Finance, at the University of the Free State Business School. Her academic journey did not stop there; she further pursued Economic Policy and Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand and is currently concluding her MBA at Henley International Business School.

Reflecting on her choice of institution, Brown notes that she was drawn to the Business School’s strong reputation for academic excellence, practical relevance, and leadership development. “I wanted an institution that would challenge me intellectually while preparing me to lead effectively in both the public and private sectors,” she says.

Her time as a student was both demanding and rewarding. It sharpened her critical thinking, strengthened her leadership confidence, and exposed her to diverse perspectives – an experience she describes as formative in shaping her professional and personal growth.

From banking to government leadership

Brown’s career began in the banking sector, where she held roles at Standard Bank in commercial, private, and public sector banking. This experience laid a strong foundation in financial services, client relationship management, and professional discipline.

Her transition to the public sector in 2013 marked the beginning of an impactful leadership journey. She has since held several senior roles, including Chief Director of Small Business Development, Chief Financial Officer, Deputy Director-General of Economic Development, and Head of Department in key provincial portfolios.

She later served as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance in the Free State Provincial Government and as Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL). Each role deepened her expertise in governance, public finance, and economic transformation.

Leading with purpose and impact

In her current role as Special Economic Adviser, Brown focuses on policy engagement, strategic analysis, and support for executive decision-making at the highest levels of government. Her work plays a vital role in shaping policies that impact communities across South Africa.

She is particularly passionate about empowering women and young people through financial knowledge and opportunity. Her contributions have been widely recognised, earning her accolades such as the ACFE African Membership Award, the Top Empowerment Women’s Award (2022), a Standard Bank Top Women Award, and the Congress of Business and Economics Leadership Award.

Despite her many achievements, Brown remains grounded in her purpose: to create meaningful, lasting change. “What excites me most is knowing that the work I do can make a real difference in people’s lives,” she shares.

Overcoming challenges through resilience

Like many professionals balancing work, studies, and family life, Brown faced challenges during her academic journey. Managing these responsibilities required discipline, careful planning, and resilience.

“I had to remain focused on my long-term goals while ensuring I was present for my family,” she explains. With the support of mentors, colleagues, and peers, she turned these challenges into opportunities for growth.

Her experience instilled in her the importance of adaptability, strategic thinking, and continuous learning skills that remain essential in today’s fast-evolving, technology-driven world.

The value of lifelong learning

Brown is a strong advocate for postgraduate education, emphasising its role in developing strategic thinking, leadership, and analytical skills. Her MBA journey continues to enhance her ability to navigate complex challenges and make informed decisions.

“Postgraduate studies deepen your expertise, broaden your perspective, and prepare you for leadership,” she says. “They build the discipline and critical thinking needed in a rapidly changing world.”

A Business School that shapes leaders

According to Brown, what sets the Business School apart is its commitment to producing not just graduates, but also responsible leaders. The institution’s emphasis on practical application, ethical decision-making, and leadership development has been instrumental in her success.

“The Business School gave me both technical knowledge and practical leadership skills,” she reflects. “It strengthened my ability to think analytically, communicate effectively, and lead with integrity.”

A message to future leaders

Driven by purpose and a passion for service, Brown defines success not just by personal achievement but also by the impact one has on others. Her journey is a reminder that education is more than a qualification. It is a platform for transformation.

Her message to aspiring students is both simple and profound:

“Success is changing one life at a time. Lead with integrity, pursue self-growth, find your purpose, and leave a legacy that empowers others to thrive.”
