Principals Breakfast
Prof Hester C. Klopper, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of the Free State, addresses school principals and top-performing matriculants during the Principals and High Achievers Networking Breakfast held at the Centenary Complex on the Bloemfontein Campus.

The University of the Free State (UFS) recently welcomed school principals and top-performing matriculants from across the Free State to a Principals and High Achievers Networking Breakfast, celebrating academic excellence and strengthening partnerships that support the development of future leaders.

Held on the Bloemfontein Campus, the event brought together approximately 140 guests, including Grade 12 academic high achievers, school principals, university leadership, deans, and staff. The gathering created an opportunity to recognise outstanding learners while encouraging them to consider the possibilities of higher education at the UFS.

Recognising leadership in education

Opening the programme, Kovsie students welcomed guests before Prof Ylva Rodny-Gumede, Executive Director: Advancement, introduced the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Hester C. Klopper.

Addressing the audience, Prof Klopper acknowledged the dedication of school pupils and educators who play a critical role in shaping the future of their communities.

“It is such a great privilege to share this room with people who have dedicated their lives to one of the greatest purposes there can be: the education of young minds,” she said.

Expressing appreciation for the work being done in schools across the province, she added, “You are the front line. You set the tone. We are fortunate to have you as crucial partners.”

Celebrating academic excellence in the Free State

Prof Klopper also commended the strong academic culture within the province, noting that the Free State continues to produce excellent matric results year after year.

“Our provincial matric results reflect not only the hard work of learners, but also the disciplined and values-driven leadership within schools such as yours,” she said.

A short question-and-answer session, facilitated by Nomonde Mbadi, Director of Student Recruitment Services, provided guests with an opportunity to engage with university leadership and learn more about developments at the institution.

Partnering to build responsible societal futures

During her address, Prof Klopper highlighted the UFS vision of contributing to responsible societal futures, emphasising the role universities play in developing graduates who combine academic excellence with social responsibility.

“We are not simply here to produce graduates,” she said. “We are here to produce good citizens – people who leave this institution not only with degrees, but also with the wisdom, ethical grounding, and courage to contribute meaningfully to the world they will inhabit.”

She also emphasised the importance of collaboration between schools and the university through initiatives such as the Science for the Future Programme, which supports the teaching and learning of mathematics and science in schools across the province.

Inspiring the next generation

The programme included a certificate presentation recognising participating schools and the outstanding academic achievements of their matriculants. Principals received certificates on behalf of their schools as they were announced.

For many of the young people present, the event offered a glimpse into the opportunities that lie ahead at university. Through partnerships with schools and educators, the UFS continues to nurture talented young people and support their journey into higher education.

As Prof Klopper concluded: “When you send us your star learners, we take that trust seriously. We are ready for them.”
