Fulda Exchange
Lisakhanya Jack and Aphelele Sivile, Bachelor of Social Work students at the University of the Free State, will participate in a five-month academic exchange at Fulda University of Applied Sciences in Germany from April to August 2026.

Two students from the University of the Free State (UFS) will soon embark on an international academic journey to Germany as part of the university’s ongoing commitment to global engagement and student mobility.

Lisakhanya Jack and Aphelele Sivile, both second-year Bachelor of Social Work students, have been selected to participate in a five-month academic exchange at Fulda University of Applied Sciences in Germany.

This opportunity marks an important milestone in the long-standing partnership between the UFS and Fulda University of Applied Sciences, which began on 1 August 2018. The 2026 cohort represents the 12th cycle of student exchanges between the two institutions, reflecting the strength and sustainability of a seven-year collaboration that has steadily expanded opportunities for student mobility and academic cooperation.

Through this partnership students can engage with international learning environments while strengthening institutional ties between South Africa and Germany.

The exchange forms part of UFS’ broader strategy to strengthen international partnerships and provide students with opportunities to gain global academic exposure. During their time abroad, the students will continue their studies while engaging with new academic perspectives and cultural experiences.

Preparing students for a global learning experience

Ahead of their departure, the Directorate for International Partnerships and Relations hosted a Pre-Departure Orientation to prepare the students for the academic, cultural, and logistical aspects of studying abroad. The session brought together several university support units to ensure that the students are well prepared for their international mobility experience.

Representatives from the Directorate welcomed the students and highlighted the importance of international mobility within the university’s internationalisation agenda. Students were encouraged to embrace the opportunity and reflect on the transformative role that international exchanges can play in shaping their academic and professional journeys.

Representatives from Student Counselling and Development and the Centre for Teaching and Learning also participated in the session, providing guidance on psychological readiness, academic administration processes, and the remote support services available to students while studying abroad.

As part of the mobility programme, Mbali Moiketsi,  Study Abroad Manager,  emphasised the broader value of international learning opportunities.

“At the University of the Free State, we are committed to creating opportunities that prepare our students to become globally engaged graduates. Exchange programmes such as this one not only enrich the academic experience but also contribute to developing socially conscious leaders who can operate across borders and cultures.”

International mobility initiatives such as this contribute to the university’s broader mission of producing graduates who are globally competent and socially responsive.

Strengthening global learning opportunities for UFS students

For Lisakhanya and Aphelele, the exchange represents an opportunity to broaden their academic horizons while representing UFS abroad.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Lisakhanya said:

“This opportunity in Germany will expand my worldview, strengthen my academic journey, and inspire me to make a greater impact in my field.”

Aphelele explained that he set a personal goal to apply for an exchange programme in 2025, a goal that has now become a reality as he prepares for his trip to Fulda.

“This opportunity will challenge me to grow both academically and personally, learn from a new environment, and return with a broader perspective.”

As they prepare for their departure, the two students will carry with them not only the knowledge and skills gained at the UFS, but also the responsibility of representing the university and South Africa on the international stage.
