Young performers from the Free State and Northern Cape share the Odeion Auditorium stage to celebrate collaboration, culture, and unity at the 2026 High School Choir Showcase.

Far from a mere aesthetic exercise, choral discipline sharpens cognitive ability and cultivates societal alignment. It provides an essential framework for youth development, demonstrating how creative collaboration actively shapes a sustainable future.

The High School Choir Showcase brought together outstanding school choirs from across the Free State and Northern Cape. Performing alongside the University of the Free State Bloemfontein Campus Choir, these young artists were given the opportunity to share a professional stage and display their collective talents in the Odeion Concert Hall

A foundation for human development

Speaking at the event, KovsieSport Director, Jerry Laka, emphasised the profound impact that music has on young minds and broader communities. He noted that musical training enhances cognitive development, supporting crucial functions such as memory, attention, language processing, and numeracy.

"Tonight is more than just a concert," Laka stated. "It is a celebration of talent, discipline, culture, collaboration, and the power of music to bring people together across schools, communities, and generations."

This focus on communal alignment reflects the core values of the university. Laka explained that the institution views creative expression as an essential pillar of growth, stating, "At the University of the Free State, we strongly believe that arts and culture form an important part of student development and human development." Through these musical platforms, the university continues to cultivate environments rooted in belonging, identity, and leadership.

Institutional impact and collaboration

According to Choirmaster Werner Stander, the 2026 High School Choir Showcase reflects the powerful role that collaboration plays in strengthening both institutional and regional choral music-making. Bringing together the University of the Free State Bloemfontein Campus Choir with some of the finest school choirs from the Free State and Northern Cape has created an inspiring platform for musical growth, shared learning, and artistic exchange.

Stander noted that the showcase not only celebrates excellence and discipline in choral performance, but also nurtures mentorship, friendship, and a deeper appreciation for South Africa’s rich choral tradition. Leading our campus choir alongside talented young singers from across the region has been a rewarding experience, particularly during the University of the Free State Choir’s historic 60th anniversary year, and highlights the university’s continued commitment to cultural development, youth empowerment, and community engagement through music.

Shaping sustainable futures through the arts

Platforms such as these continue to demonstrate the important role that the arts play in student development, social cohesion, identity formation, and creating spaces of belonging for young people. Beyond performance, these engagements help to cultivate confidence, leadership, cultural appreciation, and meaningful human connection.

Lucy Sehloho, Manager in Arts and Culture, had the following to say, “Platforms such as these continue to demonstrate the important role that the arts play in student development, social cohesion, identity formation, and creating spaces of belonging for young people. Beyond performance, these engagements help cultivate confidence, leadership, cultural appreciation, and meaningful human connection.”

For many of the visiting learners, the showcase was not merely a memorable performance, but an open invitation to view the University of the Free State as their future academic and artistic home.
