Prof Hester C. Klopper, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of the Free State, wishes students and staff well as the university prepares for the end-of-year examination period.
There is a familiar change in the rhythm of campus life as examinations approach. Along the pathways between the historic red-brick buildings on our Bloemfontein Campus and on our South And Qwaqwa Campuses, students are making their way to the libraries to prepare for the weeks ahead.
Thinking back, I remember the discipline that preparing for examinations demanded. I know that many of you are also balancing your studies with family responsibilities and personal challenges. I hope you will recognise how far you have come and take pride in the effort you have invested throughout the year.
I also want to thank our lecturers, invigilators, administrative and professional colleagues. From preparing examination papers and coordinating venues to assisting students, there is considerable work involved in ensuring that the examination period runs smoothly. I appreciate the care and professionalism that our colleagues bring to this responsibility.
Taking care of ourselves and one another
To our students, as you enter each examination, trust the knowledge you have gained and the preparation you have undertaken. Some days will be more challenging than others, and I hope you will be patient with yourselves when those challenges arise.
As the pace of preparation intensifies, I encourage everyone to make time for their well-being. Get enough rest, take breaks, and stay connected with the people who support you.
Examination pressure can sometimes affect your ability to concentrate, sleep, or manage everyday responsibilities. Please reach out when you need support.
Our Student Counselling and Development team offers counselling and practical resources on examination anxiety and study methods, while our
Social Support Office assists students who are experiencing personal and social difficulties. You can find the relevant contacts for your campus on these pages, and the UFS Student Careline – on 0800 00 6363 – provides free, confidential support 24 hours a day.
One of the things I value most about our university is the willingness of our people to support one another. I hope we will continue to show that same consideration and kindness across all three campuses in the weeks ahead.
I am cheering you on, and I look forward to celebrating your achievements. To our colleagues, thank you for your continued commitment to supporting our students’ success.
I wish our entire UFS community strength, peace of mind, and a successful conclusion to the academic year. Please take good care of yourselves and one another.
