OSM Wind Bands Gala Concert

The Odeion School of Music (OSM) will present the OSM Wind Bands Gala Concert at the Odeion Auditorium on Saturday 14 April as a culmination of their Wind Bands Festival and Conductor’s Workshop. The Free State Youth Wind Ensemble, conducted by main workshop presenter Gerben Grooten, will première Noel Stockton’s Marche Amusant as the concert overture. Thereafter each conductor will have the opportunity to conduct their specific works. The conductors include Anton Esterhuyse, Hatting Davel, Itumeleng Pooe, Joseph Carlo, Joseph Moilwa, Joas Erasmus, Heinrich Lategan, Eslon Hindundu, Tuhafeni Michael and Renier de Bruin.

Some of the works that will be conducted include Majestia (James Swearingen), Ammerland (Jacob De Haan), Whirlwind (James Curnow), March from the Second Suite in F (Gustav Holst), Acclamations (Ed Huckeby), and Sinatra in Concert (Jerry Nowak). After interval, the Johannesburg Youth Wind Band, under the baton of Etienne Mecloen, will thrill audiences with The Light Eternal (Swearingen), Dam Busters March (Eric Coates), Florentiner March (Julius Fucik) and The Mask of Zorro (James Horner).

The Free State Symphony Orchestra and the Black Tie Ensemble and Voice Opera One Stop Shop (BTE VO1SS) are joining forces on Saturday 14 April to present a programme of well-known excerpts from operas by Giuseppe Verdi conducted by Alexander Fokkens. They will also be joined by the choirs from Meisieskool Oranje and Grey College.

The first half of the programme will consists of excerpts from La Traviata. After interval, excerpts from some of Verdi’s best known (and some lesser known) operas will follow: La Forza del Destino Overture, La Donna e Mobile from Rigoletto with the tenor Khotso Tsekeletsa as soloist, the duo Canzone del velo from Don Carlo with the sopranos Brenda Thulo and Caroline Modiba, the exciting baritone aria Cortigiani vil razza from Rigoletto with Thabang Senekal as soloist, the trio Qual voluta trascorrere from I Lombardi with Brenda Thulo (soprano), Phenye Modiane (tenor) and Dikgang Mantoro (baritone) and the famous quartet from Rigoletto with Khotso Tsekeletsa, Caroline Modiba, Brenda Thulo and Thabang Senekal. One of the highlights of the evening will be the famous Slave’s Chorus from Nabucco.
