Coppélia en die Poppemaker

A cranky old doll maker and his cheeky, talking dolls, two lovebirds and a beautiful girl are but some of the characters you’ll meet in Coppélia en die Poppemaker. This children’s production by the drama department of the University of the Free State (UFS) is based on the story of the famous ballet Coppélia, but is actually a play suited for children of all ages.

Franz and Swanhilde are about to get married when Franz sees a beautiful girl in the window of the doll maker’s workshop. Everyone is scared of the weird doll maker, Dr Coppélius. When Swanhilde and her friends break into his workshop to find out more about the pretty girl and he catches them red-handed, the workshop literally comes alive.

In this enjoyable play, children will learn more about love: Not only romantic love, but love between friends and loving those who are “different”.

Coppélia en die Poppemaker is the latest children’s play based on a classical work under the direction of Marijda Kamper (known for Midsomernagdroom and Swanemeer). This time she is assisted by Ané van den Berg, while second year drama students will be performing.

Coppélia en die Poppemaker will be presented in the Rehearsal Room on the UFS campus on 2 and 3 September, as well as 8 to 10 September 2016. Tickets are available from Computicket.
