Helen Martins (1897 – 1976) is the well known and eccentric artist who created the “Owl House” at Nieu Bethesda, a small Karoo village, as an escape from mundane matters, from the outside world. The “Owl House” was Helen Martins’ home for most of her 78 years. During the last 30 or so years of her life she devoted all her  energy in creating a house full of glistening fantasy in light and colour, and a garden with over 500, almost grotesque cement statues.

This is the given in the play, “Helen van Bethesda” loosely referring to “Helen of Troy”; to towns and cities who’s destiny was sealed by a woman; to sacrifice that leads to salvation (in this case, the town of Nieu Bethesda).

Helen Martins’, the “owl woman’s” life and work gets to life in this unique production, written by Naòmi Morgan and directed by Gerben Kamper. The run is from 26 – 28 March 2013 at 19h30 in the Wynand Mouton Theatre.
