Nettie Immelman Memorial Concert
2018-05-03

3 May 2018

Odeion

19:30

Legendary piano teacher, Nettie Immelman, passed away in 2011 and the OSM presented the first memorial concert in her honour in 2012. Since then it became an annual event on the OSM concert calendar. For this year’s concert the pianist Nicol Viljoen (Associated Professor at the OSM) will be the performing artist.

Nicol Viljoen is the foremost expert of Schenkerian analysis in South Africa. His training under world-renowned specialists in the United States of America is currently still our country’s most intensive contact with dynamic international developments concerning this highly specialized music-analytical system. His research during the past two decades has focused both on theoretical Schenker studies, and on its application within musical performance practice through structuralist aural analysis. His exceptionally versatile activities as music theorist, concert pianist, chamber musician, jazz pianist, and academic, has greatly contributed to an inclusive vision of music study at the UFS. During 2003, Nicol Viljoen produced the compact disc Franz Schubert/Johannes Brahms (Unfoldings UCD001) together with the violist John Wille. In 2011, he produced his second compact disc, Transcendental Schubert, on the Mukavi label.

A Touch of Opera

A student production with excerpts from operas by MOZART and VERDI - (Le Nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte, Il Trovatore, Nabucco)

4 October 2019
19:30
Odeion

The OSM constantly strives to nurture aspiring artists for the demands of their trade as professional singers. Although we have a balanced vocal curriculum representing all classical genres, students show great interest in opera. In 2017, the OSM in collaboration with the Free State Symphony Orchestra launched an initiative to host an annual opera and/or oratorio production. In these productions, our vocal students have the opportunity of sharing the stage with professional singers and musicians and also work with experienced directors and conductors. A Touch of Opera, however, is exclusively a student production in which all our vocal students, from the Higher Certificate in Music Performance to second-year Diploma, will showcase their talent and what they have learned thus far on their educational paths.

Arias, duets and choruses from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte, as well as Verdi’s II Trovatore and Nabucco, with piano accompaniment, will be staged in the Odeion. A production team consisting of OSM lecturers will guide students in stage and musical directing and movement. Professional lighting will also assist in transcending this program of the most popular opera music into an entertaining event.
