Long-term research across connected systems

MaS-LTSER provides a shared platform for research across six interconnected themes.

Alpine wetlands and water
Mapping and monitoring wetland extent, condition, hydrological functioning and connectivity; understanding degradation processes; and supporting appropriate restoration. Research also examines how soils, wetlands, groundwater and streams influence catchment response and downstream water security.

Climate and environmental change
Building long-term records of rainfall, temperature, soil moisture and other climate variables across elevation gradients. These observations help identify microclimatic patterns, extreme events and the effects of climate change on ecosystems and livelihoods.

Soils and carbon
Quantifying and mapping soil organic carbon, investigating carbon-water interactions and identifying areas where erosion or wetland degradation could release stored carbon. Fine-scale soil information supports conservation and restoration planning.

Biodiversity and ecological change
Documenting plants, invertebrates and vertebrates; studying pollination and other species interactions; and monitoring how climate warming, invasive species and range expansion reorganise mountain communities.

Rangelands, livelihoods and society
Working with herders and other stakeholders to understand grazing systems, transhumance, local knowledge, governance, resource use and adaptation. Social research helps ensure that environmental management is both practical and equitable.

Land-use change and restoration
Monitoring changes associated with grazing, cultivation, mining, roads, fire and tourism, and evaluating their implications for biodiversity, soils, water and livelihoods. Research supports better management and targeted restoration
