The Mozambique Mountain Initiative:
Safeguarding Mozambique’s Unique Montane Ecosystems
The Mozambique Mountain Initiative (MMI) was conceived at the 2nd Southern African Mountain Conference (SAMC2025) as a unified effort to safeguard Mozambique’s rare and irreplaceable montane ecosystems. These Afromontane systems remain largely unprotected, poorly studied, and under increasing threat from climate change, unsustainable land use, and biodiversity loss. Despite covering just 13% of Mozambique’s terrestrial area, less than 1% of its mountains are formally protected, even though they host most of the country’s terrestrial endemic species.
The MMI brings together multidisciplinary practitioners to drive a national research, policy, and practice programme that promotes sustainable use and conservation. Mozambique’s mountains provide vital ecosystem services – including freshwater, food, carbon sequestration, and cultural enrichment – while supporting community livelihoods. Yet pressures from deforestation, slash‑and‑burn agriculture, and resource extraction continue to degrade these fragile landscapes.
To address these challenges, the MMI has outlined strategic conservation actions. These include developing integrated landscape management approaches, establishing legally recognised protected areas, enhancing policy and governance, promoting sustainable land use and alternative livelihoods, restoring degraded habitats, and strengthening biodiversity surveys and monitoring. Climate change adaptation, education and awareness, and transboundary collaboration with neighbouring countries are also central to the initiative.
The MMI emphasises community involvement, recognising that conservation must align with local needs and cultural values. Restoration projects, such as those modelled on Gorongosa, demonstrate how environmental protection can be linked with community wellbeing. The initiative also calls for increased funding, capacity building, and collaboration across government, NGOs, academia, and the private sector.
The Mozambique Mountain Initiative is a call for action: collective and well‑coordinated efforts are urgently needed to secure the future of Mozambique’s montane ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
