The Unit is one of the eleven structures established nationally by the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) to represent the eleven official South African languages.

The main objective of the Unit is to preserve and record the Sesotho language by compiling user friendly, comprehensive Sesotho dictionaries and other lexicographic products and to develop and promote Sesotho as a language in all spheres of life.

Motsamai J Motsapi is the Editor-in-Chief reporting to the Board of Directors of the Unit as the Unit is a Section 21 Company.

Lexicography is a profession of compiling dictionaries and the people who practise this profession are known as lexicographers. They are expected to be experts in the field of lexicography which will, among others, involve dictionary planning, the use of the dictionary, building a text corpus, macro- and micro structural aspects, as well as dictionary typologies etc.
