During my studies

BA Drama and Theatre Arts is a three-year degree where students study four modules: History of Drama and Performance, Drama and Performance Studies, Technical Management and Scenography and Performance Practice for the first two years of study.

The History of Drama and Performance component focuses on the origin and development of drama and theatre practices.

The Drama and Performance Studies component examines the theoretical aspects of performing arts, focusing on script analysis, acting techniques, movement studies, speech theory, and directing as a field of study and film studies.

Performance Practice focuses on acting, theatre-making, movement, voice and speech training. Students perform in several productions in the second and third years of study.

Technical Management, Design and Scenography focus on all the technical aspects of a production, including décor design, sound, lighting, costume design and stage management.

In the third year of study

Students continue with Theories of Drama and Performance and Fundamentals of Theatre Directing while selecting a practical major: Acting, Technical Theatre Management, Design and ScenographyFilm Practice or Theatre-Making.

Theories of Drama and Performance
presents a historical and theoretical discussion of Drama and Performance related to the 20th and 21st centuries. The module focuses on a range of theatre and film movements, theories and practices that developed in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Fundamentals of Theatre Directing focuses on the basic fundamentals of theatre directing. Students will be familiar with the process of directing, from conceptualising, script analysis, auditions, and rehearsal processes to basic directing techniques.

Admission to Acting is subject to a selection process and the module focuses on acting in a production/s and acting and directing for theatre, film and television.

Film Practice focuses on practical filmmaking’s pre-production, production and post-production phases. This module is theoretical and practical.

Design & Scenography is a theoretical and practical module. The theoretical and practical sessions in this module cover the principles of theatrical design and scenography.

Technical Theatre Management focuses on developing the student’s technical theatre technique and overall theatrical awareness. Integrating practice and theory, the module combines practical implementation with reflections and discussions on assigned technical tasks/projects.

Theatre-Making investigates various approaches to creating theatre, including writing, designing, directing and workshopping. These approaches are explored in both theory and practice.

Arts Management forms part of the above-mentioned practical majors.
